Tyrone Johnson

Chief Executive Officer

Has led automotive engineering organisations for more than three decades, from Ford to Hyundai Motor Europe.

Tyrone Johnson has spent more than three decades leading engineering organisations through some of the automotive industry's most demanding challenges. His work spans global OEM product development, vehicle engineering, executive leadership and strategic transformation across Europe and Asia.

He is known for delivering complex programmes, developing high-performing teams and making critical decisions under pressure. Leading multidisciplinary organisations responsible for developing and delivering vehicles and future mobility technologies, he has earned his teams' trust by remaining calm, decisive and focused on execution.

Tyrone believes in backing capable people. He recognises potential where others see risk and gives individuals the opportunity to take ownership, an approach that has shaped successful programmes and the careers of many leaders who have worked alongside him.

Following a career at Ford Motor Company, he joined Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center, where he led Vehicle Development before being appointed Managing Director. In that role he was the strategic link between Hyundai's European engineering operations and the global organisation in South Korea, helping shape the future of zero-emission mobility.

At Ordinary World Innovations, Tyrone brings the perspective of someone who has solved complex business and engineering challenges from the front line. He believes the toughest problems are overcome through experienced leadership, empowered teams and the courage to challenge conventional thinking.

SCARS EARNED

  1. Spent 41 years at the sharp end of vehicle development, progressing from hands-on engineering and motorsport through Chief Engineer, Engineering Director and Managing Director roles. Learned that successful products are rarely delivered by process alone—they require judgement, accountability and leaders willing to confront difficult realities early.

  2. Led major vehicle programmes and international engineering organisations through technical, timing and organisational pressure.
Stepped into complex situations where priorities were unclear, assumptions needed challenging and teams had to be refocused on the few issues that would genuinely determine whether the programme succeeded or failed.

  3. Carried the discipline of Ford Racing and Formula 1 into mainstream automotive development, applying the same principles of rapid decision-making, engineering rigour, clear ownership and relentless execution when programme timing and product performance were under pressure.

  4. Worked across European, American and Asian engineering cultures, learning how to bridge the gap between executive ambition and engineering reality. Built alignment between senior leadership, technical teams and product objectives while retaining the independence to challenge conventional thinking when the evidence said the organisation was heading in the wrong direction.
